Challenge

myCBBC

Create a completely safe social networking site aimed at children between 6 and 12.

Solution

Twofour Digital came up with an online personalised den that allows the child to use CBBC content and then allow their friends into their own dens with the ability to share content. Each den can be tailored with different styles of 3D furniture and really comes to life with the interactive accessories such as:

  • TV screen – see latest CBBC updates streamed to your den
  • Calendar – save dates and see when your favourite CBBC shows are on air
  • Computer – store and share your favourite websites and games
  • Mobile phone – send a receive messages from your friends
  • Gift box – send and receive gifts to your best friends
  • Magazine – subscribe to RSS feeds
  • Radio – check out UK Top 40 and rate best and worst.

Result

MyCBBC is a safe introduction to social networking for children, designed to involve a new audience in the latest technology. The site will not allow free text, does not allow sharing of personal data and ensures that children have complete control over who can see their dens, so parents can be confident their children will be able to share online friendships safely and without supervision.

BBC Radio on the iPlayer

Challenge

BBC Radio on the iPlayer

Receive incoming audio from BBC Radio and encode it to a variety of formats before delivering to the BBC internet infrastructure ...within five minutes of broadcast, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Solution
Realising that no 3rd party encoding product existed that met all of the requirements of the BBC, Twofour designed an entire live and on-demand encoding farm from the ground upwards, working with leading companies such as Fraunhofer and Adobe. Critical to the solution were extremely high availability, full integrated monitoring and rapid processing of content together with the need for swift adoption of new formats, as required by the BBC's business needs.

Twofour installed and configured over 100 servers, to create this custom encoding farm, within the BBC’s secure network at Broadcasting House to provide all of the audio (live, on-demand and podcasts) of BBC Radio for the iPlayer. This complex project required significant consultancy, major network installation and  configuration

Result
The system has been working  reliably since December 2008 delivering live and on-demand audio
The  iPlayer now offers better audio quality and delivers content to more devices  than ever before
